How this estimate works

Cubic yards

Convert depth from inches to feet (divide inches by 12). Volume in cubic feet is area × depth in feet. For a rectangle, area = length × width. For a circle, area = π × (diameter ÷ 2)².

Cubic yards = volume (cu. ft) ÷ 27

Tons by material type

Industry rules of thumb convert cubic yards to tons based on how the material packs (same approach as common aggregate calculators):

  • Fine materials (sands, concrete, asphalt): cubic yards × 1.5 = tons
  • Coarse materials (gravel, limestone, typical stone sizes): cubic yards × 1.65 = tons
  • Base materials (304, 411, screenings): cubic yards × 1.75 = tons

This is an estimating tool only. Actual tonnage varies with moisture, compaction, and specific product. Confirm orders with your supplier.
